fter recently coming across a number of short news reports about champion boxer Roy Jones Jr. and his travels in Russia, it was pleasantly surprising to find him being interviewed for a half-hour from Crimea. It’ll be interesting to see whether American television audiences will soon find a similar half-hour interview of Mr. Jones Jr. during their prime-time viewing.
Like world heavyweight boxing champion Muhammad Ali nearly a half century ago when he said “I’ve got nothing against those Vietnamese people” – refused to go fight in Vietnam and was stripped of his boxing title, and was banned from boxing for years during his prime while holding to his spiritual beliefs – Roy Jones Jr. is taking a personal moral stand for peace: between Americans and Russians.
During the interview Mr. Jones talked about the importannce of showing real mutual respect between human beings, that this is one of the fundamental qualities necessary for sitting down and engaging in dialogue to resolve differences and offers the best option as opposed to wars and killing each other. Others may agree that Roy Jones Jr. deserves the highest of respect and sincere gratitude for his efforts to create peace between Americans and Russians, and that what he’s attempting should earn him mention for a place on this year’s list of Nobel Peace Prize nominees.
What is particularly refreshing about his way of looking at the world is how the philosophy combines wisdom with simplicity, where, in contrast to academics who seem to need 2-hours of in-depth, complicated analysis to talk about East-West relations, Mr. Jones distills what’s said in 2-hours by highly respected professors down to “we can talk to resolve differences instead of killing each other.”
It’s probably the case that most men and women who listen to Roy Jones Jr. speak in his both simple and profound way will come to develop a great appreciation for the vision of peace he’s been guided by spirit to pursue. Such a high vision is worthy of pursuit at all times, now more than ever, and is perhaps best described as humankind’s highest visionary potential.
The great vision of peace can be achieved when a sufficient number of men, women and children on Earth develop their God-given abilities to the point of collectively “delivering the knockout punch to wars and violence”. The entire world needs to get what Roy Jones Jr.’s got – the heart of a champion for peace.
