GENEVA – The Independent Expert on the promotion of a democratic and equitable international order, Alfred de Zayas, is alarmed by the general lack of awareness concerning the adverse effects that existing bilateral and multilateral free trade and investment agreements have already had on the enjoyment of human rights in many countries, particularly in the developing world.  He is concerned about the secrecy surrounding current negotiations for trade treaties like the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP), the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) and the Trade in Services Agreement (TISA), currently under discussion, which have excluded key stakeholder groups from the process, including labour unions, environmental protection groups, food-safety movements and health professionals.
