earthblog3The life and philosophy of Tony Benn.

“But men must know, that in this theater of man’s life it is reserved only for God and the angels to be lookers on.”

– Francis Bacon

“Heroism is the brilliant triumph of the soul over the flesh – that is to say, over fear: fear of poverty, of suffering, of calumny, of sickness, of isolation, and of death. There is no serious piety without heroism. Heroism is the dazzling and glorious concentration of courage.”

– Henri Frederic Amiel

“Live not by old ethics and the classical rules of honesty. Put no new names nor notions upon authentic virtues and vices. Think not that morality is ambulatory; that vices in one age are not vices in another; or that virtues, which are under the everlasting seal of right reason, may be stamped with opinion.”

– Sir Thomas Browne

“Fate often saves an undoomed warrior when his courage endures.”

– Beowulf

Tsze-kung asked, saying, ‘Is there one word which may serve as a rule of practice for all one’s life?’ The Master said, ‘Is not reciprocity such a word? What you do not want done to yourself, do not do to others.’

– Confucius

“He who has begun his task has half done it. Have the courage to be wise; Begin.”

– Horace

Confucius replied… “wisdom, compassion and courage – these are the three universally recognized moral qualities of man. It matters not in what way men come to the exercise of these qualities, the result is one and the same.”

– Tze-Sze

“Government, in its very essence, is opposed to all increase in knowledge. Its tendency is always toward permanence and against change… The progress of humanity, far from being the result of government, has been made entirely without its aid and in the face of its constant and bitter opposition.”

– H.L. Mencken

“Living is struggle… Every good and excellent thing in the world stands moment by moment on the razor-edge of danger and must be fought for – whether it’s a field, a home, or a country. All I ask is the chance to build new worlds and God has always given us that.”

– Thornton Wilder

“The great man does not think beforehand of his words that they may be sincere, nor of his actions that they may be resolute, – he simply speaks and does what is right.”

– Mencius

“Without philosophy we should be little above animals.”

– Voltaire

“The highest good is immortal.”

– Lucius Annaeus Seneca

    1. Carol,
Listening to Tony Benn talk about being six years old sitting at the feet of Gandhi, along with his words suggesting his study of all traditions, shows a side of him that I hadn’t been aware of. So, Tony Benn can be seen in the same category as Gandhi, Mandela, King, and others whose spirituality was the greatest factor in determining thoughts, words and deeds. Yes, an exquisite film and unforgettable man.
      Thanks,
      Jerry
